A Day Trip to Burney Falls: The Eighth Wonder of the World

Teddy Roosevelt once dubbed it “the Eighth Wonder of the World.” And at 129 feet high, it’s easy to see why. Whether you’re staying with us at Volcanic Legacy RV Resort for a night, a week, or a month, a day trip to Burney Falls should be on your itinerary.

Burney Falls is part of Northern California’s McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park. Approximately 75 miles south of Klamath Falls, it’s an easy, scenic day trip for RVers. As you head south on Highway 97 and wind your way toward Highway 89, you’ll pass through dense evergreen forests, open meadows, and classic Northern California mountain scenery. Be sure to keep an eye out for Mount Shasta along the way.

The trip takes about 1.5 to 2 hours each way, depending on stops. We recommend packing snacks, water, and comfortable walking shoes to make the most of your visit.

What Makes Burney Falls So Special?

Burney Falls isn’t the tallest waterfall in the West, but it may be the most mesmerizing. The sheer volume and consistency of water flow are what make it stand out. The falls are fed by underground springs from volcanic aquifers. This means the water not only cascades from a 129-foot-tall drop but also seeps dramatically through porous basalt rock along the cliff face.

The result? A curtain of shimmering water that flows year-round.

On sunny days, the mist rising from the base creates rainbows, and the deep turquoise pool below is strikingly clear. Former President Teddy Roosevelt famously described Burney Falls as the “Eighth Wonder of the World”, and visitors echo that sentiment today.

Are There Trails and Things to Do During a Day Trip to Burney Falls?

One of the best parts about visiting Burney Falls is its accessibility. The main overlook is just a short walk from the parking area, which makes it easy for visitors of all ages to enjoy the view.

For a closer look at the falls, take the Burney Falls Loop Trail. The 1.3-mile paved path descends to the base of the falls and circles around. Standing at the bottom, you can truly appreciate the power and beauty of the cascading water.

If you’re looking to extend your day trip to Burney Falls, the park connects to a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail for longer hikes through forested terrain. There are also picnic areas throughout the park, so consider packing a lunch to enjoy under the towering pines.

Lake Britton is located within the park and is popular for fishing. Wildlife sightings – including deer, birds, and the occasional bald eagle – add to the experience.

What is the Best Time for a Day Trip to Burney Falls?

Burney Falls is truly spectacular year-round. Spring and early summer are filled with the most vibrant greenery and wildflowers. Fall brings crisp air and fewer crowds. In winter, the falls rarely freeze completely, creating a dramatic contrast between flowing water and icy edges.

Summer is the busiest season, so plan to arrive early in the day for easier parking and a more peaceful experience.

Do You Have Tips for RV Travelers?

While McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park does have a campground, many of our guests prefer to leave their larger rigs parked here at Volcanic Legacy RV Resort and take a tow vehicle or car for the day. The roads into the park are manageable, but parking can be tight during busy seasons.

Before you head out, stop by our office for directions and local travel tips. We’re always ready to help guests explore the area.
